I’ve always wished that I knew how to paint. It would have been awesome if, at a young age, I was exposed to the art of drawing and painting. But as it turned out, it’s not until now, my late 30s, that I get to begin the baby steps of learning how to paint.
I’ve decided on starting out with watercolors because it looks a little less intimidating than oil or acrylics. Also, it seems to require fewer materials to start with, which is a big plus for this beginner painter.
If you don’t already know, I also dabble in photography as a hobby. In my Instagram photo account, I happened upon a beautiful, yet simple, photo of a sunset. It was taken by @crop.happens, who was gracious enough to let me use the photo as my inspiration.
Before I started, I thought my biggest challenge was going to be the sky. The blend of three main colors looked difficult to recreate. I wasn’t sure I could get the yellow to stand out.
However, the hardest part turned out to be the trees! I couldn’t get the trees to show clearly show individual branches, the way they did in the photo. I tried different brushes and amount of brush wetness, all to no avail. So I ended up with bushy trees instead! LOL
I think I needed to find the right, fine-tipped brush to do the tree branches. More practice is needed, obviously. And I plan to recreate this piece again until I get those tress right. Also, it couldn’t hurt to work on that sky some more and get those contrails to show up more.
More YouTube tutorials are in my future, I’m sure. Its gonna be fun and challenging.
I hope you come along on my painting journey!
It looks lovely!! And they are still happy little trees. Love that you are diving into creativity — I think we should never stop learning and finding new ways to express our creative self. 🙂
