The Bubba Gump Experience

I recently visited the Bubba Gump Restaurant in Long Beach, CA. Here’s a brief bio from Wikipedia:

“The Bubba Gump Shrimp Company Restaurant and Market is an American seafood restaurant chain inspired by the 1994 film Forrest Gump. The Bubba Gump restaurant is named after the film’s characters Benjamin Buford “Bubba” Blue and Forrest Gump. In the film, Bubba suggested getting in the shrimping business and, ultimately, Forrest pursued the idea after Bubba’s death in the Vietnam War. Like the name suggests, Bubba Gump Shrimp Co.’s menu consists mostly of shrimp dishes and other seafood, as well as Southern and Cajun cuisine. The restaurant offers dishes named after characters in the movie, like Jenny’s Catch and the restaurant’s bestseller Forrest’s Seafood Feast. Restaurants display movie memorabilia throughout the restaurant. Guests can play Forrest Gump movie trivia and can signal their waiter with a “Stop, Forrest, Stop” sign. Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. also has a children’s menu.”

It’s a cute little place with a unique atmosphere. Walking in, there was their logo on one wall and on the opposite side, a bulletin board with “Forrest Gump” paraphernalia. The movie was playing above it too!

Inside, it was crowded, but lively. Our table had a bucket in the middle that contained a roll of napkin and hand wipes. In order to get an attendant’s attention, you had to put up the metal sign that read, “Stop Forrest Stop.” If you didn’t need any help, you put up the sign that read, “Run Forrest Run.”

Needless to say, the drinks were great and the food was yummy. I expected their shrimp dishes to taste especially fresh since they were so close to the wharf… I’m happy to report it really was good!

Of course, my favorite part were the light-up souvenir mugs. It projects the company logo on the bottom!

It was a satisfying experience and I would definitely go back if I’m ever in that city again. The weather was beautiful AND the restaurant is just right across The Aquarium of the Pacific! I went there too, actually. But I’ll save those pics for another post.

  1. Nice. We have one in San Francisco at Pier 39. Sadly, I am allergic to all seafood and shellfish and I have never been in it. The funny thing is that my son was talking about wanting to go there the other day. I guess I will take him and find something else on the menu for me.

Thanks for hosting and have a wonderful week.

    1. It’s a nice place to go, but if you’re allergic to seafood and shellfish, wouldn’t every dish there be pretty much contaminated? I wouldn’t take the chance if I were you. Maybe you can order him food there for pick up, then you order from somewhere else for pick up, THEN you can have a picnic or something! Well, that’s what I would do… 😉
